Kliff Kingsbury Talks Up Cardinals Newcomer Zach Ertz

The Philadelphia Eagles traded three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals for cornerback Tay Gowan and a 2022 fifth-round draft pick, and Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he's excited.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about him. I think he’ll fit right in with this locker room and I think Steve [Keim] did a tremendous job getting that done. He’s a complete player. I think you saw Maxx’s production continue to increase, and fills a role for us right now," Kingsbury said.

The Cardinals were in need of a tight end after Maxx Williams suffered a gruesome knee injury during the first half of Sunday's win over San Francisco and was lost for the season.

Ertz had the option to stay in Philadelphia for the weekend but opted to fly to Arizona and then travel to Cleveland in order to meet teammates and study the offense, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports.

“Obviously I’m excited to be going to a team like the Arizona Cardinals, who are rolling right now, and be able to add my skill set to that team,” Ertz said. “Ecstatic about that situation, to be able to walk into that building and show what kind of player I am, the work ethic I have, with no expectation. Just want to win football games.”

Ertz caught 579 passes in an Eagles uniform – 612 including the postseason — and caught four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 28-22 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.

Gowan, who was drafted by the Cardinals in the sixth round, was a project for the Cardinals.

The rookie out of UCF made the 53-man roster but was raw and had not been active on game days even with the Cardinals suffering injuries at the position, AZCardinals.com's Darren Urban reports.
