Kerryon Johnson Cut By Lions, Should Find Work Quickly

Kerryon Johnson has been a member of the Detroit Lions since 2018. Back then, when he heard his name called in the second round of the draft, the Auburn product expected to become a focal point in Detroit's backfield for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, those hopes are coming to an end. Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network tweeted out Wednesday night that Johnson will be cut. Considering Johnson's been in the league for only three seasons, he'll be subject to waivers first.

The decision to move on from Johnson shouldn't come as a surprise.

First off, starting running back D'Andre Swift was a second-round pick last year, and the Lions expect him to be the future at the position. As a rookie, Swift totaled 878 yards (521 rushing, 357 receiving) and 10 touchdowns.

As if Swift wasn't enough, Detroit also went out and signed free agent running back Jamaal Williams. Over the last four seasons, Williams has performed well in a limited role with the Green Bay Packers. Now he'll act as the No. 2 behind Swift, leaving little room for Johnson.

Still, Johnson will turn just 24 in late June. Considering his youth and the fact that he's gotten only 344 touches in three seasons, there's still plenty of tread on his tires.

So we won't be surprised if we see a team snatch him up off of waivers. There are plenty of teams out there still in need of running back depth.

A team such as the Miami Dolphins, who passed up help at the position until late, might take a chance on Johnson. Let's see where he lands.
