Justin Fields Becomes FanDuel Favorite To Go No. 3 To 49ers
Barely 24 hours after his second pro day performance, Justin Fields made a massive jump up the betting boards to be the pick for the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3 in the upcoming NFL Draft.
FanDuel now has the quarterback as a (-135) favorite for the spot, with Mac Jones (+125) and Trey Lance at (+380). Prior to this shift, Jones was the heavy favorite at a (-300). Jones had emerged as the expected pick just last week.
If you have yet to sign up for FanDuel, do it now!
At this point, it is undeniable that the 49ers are at least interested in Fields, as general manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello all went to watch him throw yesterday. It was the second time each saw him perform.
The second pro day has been described as more of a traditional, scripted event but it also may have given teams more of what they wanted to see from Fields. On the first pro day, Fields ran an impressive 4.4 in the 40-yard dash.
Richard Sherman, however, has speculated that Fields has been the pick all along, which would explain some of Shanahan's erratic behavior at the Alabama pro day. Even Nick Saban commented on his lack of communication.
“ didn’t ask me a thing. I stood right next to him. I said hi to him,” Saban told Dan Patrick. “(Niners GM) John Lynch too. They didn’t ask me a thing. Maybe they thought they weren’t allowed to.”
It is not just FanDuel that is starting to shift its expectation about the No. 3 pick. Many draft experts are as well.
"I am continuing to find myself among those skeptics," CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora wrote. "Skeptics who have evaluated this quarterback class and who find themselves shaking their heads at all of the Fields slander popping up all over the place. Skeptics who just aren't buying that Jones, for as well he played this season at Alabama, is a superior prospect worthy of being the third overall selection."
With Trevor Lawrence locked in at No. 1 to the Jaguars and most everyone expecting Zach Wilson to go No. 2 to the Jets, it appears that the pivot point in the draft could be the 49ers.
Though if the oddsmakers are reading the cards correctly, the pivot already happened.
