It's Official: Ben Roethlisberger Announces Retirement

The worst kept secret in the sports world is now public knowledge. After 18 years in the NFL, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has decided to step away from the game.

In a 2:15 video posted to his Twitter account, the 39-year-old quarterback officially announced his decision, saying among other things, "I retire from football a truly grateful man."

Roethlisberger spent all 18 of his pro seasons with Pittsburgh, which selected him 11th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. A surefire Hall of Famer, Big Ben won two Super Bowls with the Steelers and passed for more than 64,000 yards.

Ben started all 16 games in 2021, leading Pittsburgh to the playoffs for the 12th time in his 18 seasons.

After thanking his family in the video, Roethlisberger addressed the Steelers organization and fans.

"To the Rooney family, the Tull family, coach (Bill) Cowher, coach (Mike) Tomlin, and all the coaches who have poured into me:

"The incredible people on every level that make the Pittsburgh Steelers a special organization - thank you for believing in me and allowing me to battle with you in pursuit of excellence. To all my teammates and the endless friendships that I have gained, I appreciate you and our shared commitment to wearing the black and gold with pride and dignity."

Ben closed his farewell announcement appropriately, stating: "Football has been a gift and I thank God for allowing me to play it. Surrounding me with great people and protecting me through to the end. With love and honor."
