Is There Anything Cordarrelle Patterson Can't Do?

If you laughed off an early-season fantasy trade proposal that included Atlanta Falcons wideout Cordarrelle Patterson, not suspecting the crafty offensive weapon to go off this year, avert your eyes. The do-it-all receiver may now be considered a fill-in at the Defense slot after being named a third-string cornerback.

Atlanta's defensive coordinator Dean Pees stated that Patterson put practice reps in at free safety, as part of a special defensive package.

On the other end of the football, Patterson has accumulated 411 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards — a crucial component in the Falcons' five wins this season after losing Calvin Ridley and departing with long-time wideout Julio Jones in the offseason.

As mentioned in a viral interview response, Pees has not been reluctant to change his defensive model from game to game, in order to properly pick out the opponent's strong suits on offense, along with playing according to the strengths of the Falcons defense. 

Without much of a pass rush available, Pees has entrusted his secondary with the bulk of the assignments in his every-shifting scheme. 

The DC may find reasons to add Patterson moving forward, should they win a second-straight game by adding the team's best athlete to the defensive mix.

For their Week 13 matchup against the 8-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, fellow contenders from the NFC South, the Falcons will need to test every trick in the book to stop Tom Brady. 

In their Week 2 matchup, the Bucs offense handily led the win against Atlanta, 48-25. 

If the defensive plan is loyal to Pees' philosophy, Tampa Bay should be keen on a new strategy unveiled by Atlanta for their rematch. And this time around, Patterson could be the difference-maker to a huge upset. 

After all, he's caught passes from Brady in the past. 

"I want to catch an interception," Patterson told the media. "That's my next goal in the NFL, to catch an interception."
