Is Jeff Lurie Acting Too Much Like Jerry Jones, Scaring Away Potential Coaches?

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the teams trying to get it right. After another disappointing season, the front office is searching for a new head coach. Someone who can come in and get the team back to being competitive.

There are candidates out there who make sense, but there are obstacles in the way. The limited cap space is a major issue. According to Spotrac, the Eagles are ranked No. 31 in the league when it comes to available money.

It's a mess that needs to be sorted out. Contracts will need to be negotiated, players will need to be cut and there could be some growing pains in the future. But that might not be Philadelphia's biggest issue. That might be the owner.

Former team president Joe Banner sat down with The Philadelphia Inquirer recently to do a Q&A, and the final product was interesting. It revealed how involved Jeff Lurie likes to be in the day-to-day process of the team, as well as how appealing the job might be to potential candidates.

Here's a little preview of one the responses from banner:

I don't think anyone would disagree with that comment. The salary cap is an issue, and the quarterback situation with Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts is a complete question mark.

At least other openings such as the Jaguars and Jets have a top pick. One of the other openings, the Houston Texans, might be the only landing spot viewed less favorably than Philadelphia right now.

That's why Lurie has to make sure his ownership habits are considered in the "plus" column when it comes to potential coaches. Otherwise, it might be awhile before we see the Eagles making another run at a Super Bowl.

I'm not overly confident that this franchise is going to make the changes needed, regardless of how involved Lurie is in the daily process. But at least it gives them a better chance if it allows the people he hires to do their job.
