Introducing Russian Valenti Vitel, Mac Jones Gets An Odd Jersey Number & Debra Gibson Crosses Wilford Brimley Line
Well, now we need a Brooks-DeChambeau pairing at Torrey Pines
By now, you've seen the video (if not, scroll down on this post and you'll see it) of Brooks Koepka and his disdain for Bryson DeChambeau during a Golf Channel interview that was scrapped but then uploaded to a weird media player site that appeared to be affiliated with NBC. The Koepka video has since been deleted, but now it's out in the open, and the world gets to see a video that wasn't supposed to be out in the public.
Hate DeChambeau all you want, but it is this total meathead, long drive for Instagram views, crush 100-pound dumbbells to hit longer drives character that DeChambeau has created that is fueling some serious interest in the game. Then there's Koepka, who has this Jay Cutler "Don't care" attitude going on that is insufferable, but he's been deemed cool and likable by the cool Internet community, so he's Mr. Good Guy.
These two deserve to be in a Thursday pairing when the U.S. Open gets rolling at Torrey Pines in a month. One guy's clearly not going to change, while the other guy is in mental pain being around the other meathead. It's perfect theatre. The perfect ending would be DeChambeau driving Koepka further off a mental cliff.
• I was watching the NHL last night and then somehow ended up on PBS checking out a documentary, "The Donut King," on the man responsible for giving birth to the Cambodian donut shop industry in California. Needless to say, Ted Ngoy has one of the most bizarre life stories I'd ever seen in documentary form. Here I thought this was just going to be a story of how Ngoy helped Cambodians come to the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 80s. I thought the climax of the story would be Ted building this donut kingdom, and then comes the turning point of his life -- he gets a taste of Vegas. I'm not going to give away the whole story, but it's a wild one for sure.
• It will go down in history if the current 73-degree forecast holds up for the Indianapolis 500. As someone who grew up about 90 miles east of Indy, race day meant for me heading to Brookville, Indiana to go boating in the blazing heat, and then my dad would turn on the race while we were out on the lake. Then I ended up at the 100th running a few years back, and it was like 100-degrees with the humidity. 73 will feel like watching the race in Alaska.
• And finally this morning, Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen revealed that his 8-year-old son will soon need a heart transplant. That news hit me pretty hard since I have my own 8-year-old son and can't remotely imagine what Olsen and his family are going through. "We don’t know how long we will be within these hospital walls. We do know that we are in full control of our attitudes and our outlook," Olsen wrote on Instagram.
I'm no life expert that's for sure, but Olsen's words here are pretty darn powerful. We're in full control of our attitudes and outlook. Incredibly well said. All the best to this family and T.J.
