Indianapolis Colts DC Matt Eberflus Says 'No Thanks' To A Head Coaching Interview With The Texans

One of the hot, new names in NFL coaching circles is Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. He's already been linked to a number of open jobs this offseason.

The 50-year-old from Toledo, Ohio has been the Colts' DC since 2018, and this is the first year his name has really been brought up as a head coaching candidate.

The Colts, who will open Wild Card weekend on Saturday with a matchup in Buffalo against the red-hot Bills, ranked 8th overall this season in defense in the NFL, allowing 332.1 yards per game.

While one would think Eberflus would just be happy to be mentioned as a possible candidate for open head coaching jobs, he evidently doesn't think much of the opening in Houston.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that Eberflus has said "no thanks" to the Texans for an offer to come in and interview for their head coaching job.

The offer to chat with Eberflus came before the team officially made the general manager hiring of former Patriots front office director Nick Caserio public.

There's no word whether the Caserio hire has anything to do with why Eberflus turned the interview down, but something has turned him off to speaking with the Houston brass.

It could also be the turmoil over the last 24 hours regarding quarterback DeShaun Watson, who reportedly isn't happy the team hasn't spoken yet to Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, and supposedly is not happy with the hiring of Caserio.

With the Texans off the list, Eberflus is still slated to speak with a couple teams about their coaching jobs, including the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers.

At this point, the Texans have sat down with three possible head coaching candidates: former Lions and Colts coach Jim Caldwell, former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, and Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
