Hours After Inking A Record-Setting Deal, Marshon Lattimore Injures Thumb

The New Orleans Saints will be without newly-extended lockdown cornerback Marshon Lattimore for an unspecified amount of time with a thumb injury. Lattimore, who was entering the final year of his rookie deal before signing a massive $97.6 million extension just days ago, will eventually need surgery on the thumb, but for now, he is considered week to week.

The 11th overall pick out of Ohio State in 2017, Lattimore heads up a secondary that looked incredibly strong in their season opening win versus Green Bay, 38-3. The former Defensive Rookie of the Year recorded three tackles and a pass defense in the convincing “home” win (the game was moved to Jacksonville due to Hurricane Ida).

Thanks to his new five-year deal, Lattimore will be a leader on defense for many seasons to come. The extension comes with $44 million fully guaranteed and $68.3 million in total guarantees, with a maximum of $100 million in total potential money after bonuses.

In 58 regular season games, Lattimore has tallied 10 interceptions and 55 pass defenses for the Saints.

New Orleans now has to travel to Carolina to face Sam Darnold for a tough divisional game this Sunday potentially without their star corner. If the Saints play as well on offense as they did yesterday though, Lattimore’s absence may not even be a factor.
