Hall-of-Famer Kevin Greene dead at 58

Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Kevin Greene has died, according to a release from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was 58.

Greene played in the NFL from 1985-99. Along with the Steelers, he spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers. His long hair, tough-guy scowl and overall intensity were among his notable trademarks.

“The entire Pro Football Hall of Fame family mourns the passing of Kevin Greene,” Hall of Fame President & CEO David Baker said in a statement. “I regarded him as a personal friend and a true Hall of Famer in every sense. He possessed the most incredible can-do attitude of anyone I ever met. He was a great player, but more than that, he was a great man.”

No cause of death has been given.

Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward was among those who reacted to Greene’s death on social media.

“So sad to hear the news of Kevin Greene passing away,” Heyward tweeted. “I only had a couple of interactions with him, but when we did talk he always spoke with great energy and passion. May he be at peace and his family stay strong.”
