Giants Bringing Back GM Gettleman, Despite 15-33 Record In Three Seasons

Being the general manager of a team in the biggest media market in the world is never easy, but it sounds like David Gettleman's getting one last shot as GM of the New York Giants.

Giants co-owner John Mara confirmed Wednesday that Gettleman is returning for the 2021 season, despite an overall 15-33 mark under his management the last three seasons.

Many felt that, even with a chance to win the NFC East in the final week of the season, the team was going to move on from Gettleman, but a good relationship with second-year head coach Joe Judge appeared to be a big reason Gettleman is coming back.

“I think the way Dave and Joe worked together and I thought our personnel decisions were really sound this year,” Mara said Wednesday.

“I feel better about our roster. The two of them working together have built something that can have sustained success. I didn’t think making a change at this point in time would be beneficial.”

The Giants could have been a disaster in 2020, as the team lost star running back Saquon Barkley the second week of the season, but they recovered from a 1-7 start to go 5-4 in their final nine games.

That won't be enough in 2021, but it was enough to give Gettleman at least one more chance to get it right.

“There’s no defending the record,” Mara said.

“We haven’t won enough games. We made some miscalculations in 2018 with our personnel decisions. But the last two years, we’ve seen significant improvement. To break that up now and bring someone in from the outside was not going to be beneficial.”

Another season of no playoffs or at least not playing .500 ball, and it's likely Gettleman won't get yet another chance to right the ship.
