Following DUI Arrest, Former Steeler Louis Lipps Staying Away From Team’s Hall of Honor Ceremony

Former Steeler wide receiver Louis Lipps was scheduled to be a part of Pittsburgh’s Hall of Honor ceremony this weekend, but a less-than-honorable decision to drive while under the influence will keep the former Offensive Rookie of the Year from seeing the field during the ceremony.

Lipps was arrested for a DUI last weekend after he crashed into a parked trailer.

“I understand the significance of my actions this past weekend and I want to apologize and take responsibility for what occurred,” Lipps said via statement earlier this week.

Lipps' blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was .235, or more than three times the legal limit.

Along with eight other former Steeler players, Lipps will be inducted into the team's Hall of Honor this weekend. The weekend includes dinner and an induction ceremony over the weekend and closes with recognition of all the players during halftime of Pittsburgh's game against Detroit. Lipps, however, will not be in attendance.

“I have spoken with Art Rooney II and informed him that I will not attend the Steelers’ Hall of Honor ceremonies this weekend," said Lipps. "While I am flattered, humbled and honored to be included for recognition along with the other former players who are also deserving of this special weekend, I do not want to be a distraction. I am committed to working through the consequences of what transpired and will continue to be an active part of this community and the Steelers alumni.”

Steelers President Art Rooney II addressed Lipps' pending absence in a statement released by the organization: “We will move forward with Louis’ induction into the Hall of Honor at the appropriate time in the future.”

A court date for Lipps has not yet been set.
