Falcons Ink Panthers Free Agent Running Back Mike Davis To Two-Year Deal

The Atlanta Falcons are inking running back Mike Davis because they hope he will mature into a star player -- and because doing so will hurt one of their division rivals.

The Falcons are bringing Davis in for a two-year deal worth $5.5 million. He will reportedly make $3 million in guaranteed money during the first season.

The signing also comes at the expense of one of the Falcons' biggest rivals, the Carolina Panthers.

Davis got a chance to be the feature back for Carolina for just about all of the 2020 season after star running back Christian McCaffrey was sidelined with injuries. Davis, 28, then ran for 642 yards and six scores in McCaffrey's absence.

This move can only help the Falcons, who last year got little on the ground from the aging Todd Gurley. Gurley ran for just 3.5 yards per carry, and Davis should be able to step right in as the starter and be a lot more effective for the Falcons.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Davis in the fourth round back in 2015.
