Ex-Vikings Coach Mike Tice: ‘Even My Sorry A** Never Lost To Detroit’

I'm not sure what former Vikings coach Mike Tice had for lunch on Sunday, but I'd be willing to bet his order included sour grapes. Tice, still salty that Minnesota elected not to re-hire him following the 2005 season, took a shot at his former employer Sunday afternoon.

Following the Vikings' last-second 29-27 loss to previously winless Detroit, Tice tweeted: "Really. F-ing Detroit. Even my sorry ass NEVER lost to Detroit."

Tice isn't wrong. When he was Minnesota's head coach from 2002-2005, the Vikings faced divisional foe Detroit on eight occasions, and the purple guys came away with a win each time.

Once his tweet began to generate likes and shares, the 62-year-old Tice, who had an overall record of 33-34 as a head coach, attempted to backtrack his comment Monday morning. In response to someone insinuating that his original tweet was aimed at Vikings coach Mike Zimmer's performance, he tweeted: "That is NOT what I am saying. I am saying: the Vikings need to beat Detroit if they have real playoff ambitions."

Maybe this is Tice's way of drumming up some interest in a return to the NFL. Tice has been out of the league since February of 2018 when he retired after three years as the Raiders' offensive line coach.

At that time, Dan Barreiro of Minneapolis' KFAN radio reported that Tice was stepping away from the game because "players no longer want to be coached." True or not, one thing that can't be debated is players' love of social media. And now that Tice has shown he too, can be a keyboard warrior, maybe a path exists for him to return to the league as a "player's coach."

The idea of a potential return to the league would certainly give him something to chew on.
