Eagles Sign Former Steeler, Bolstering Secondary As Training Camp Approaches

The Philadelphia Eagles were able to bolster their secondary on Sunday, just a couple days before training camp opens. That help will come from former Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson, who has been on the market ever since he forced his way out of Pittsburgh back in March.

Back in March, Nelson accused the Steelers of holding him hostage. The Steelers then planned to allow the 28-year-old to seek a trade. When that didn't work out, Pittsburgh's patience grew thin and terminated his contract.

The news of Nelson's signing comes from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Fowler said it's a one-year deal worth more than $4 million, which is less than half ($8.25 million) what he would've made in Pittsburgh.

 

Nelson now has an opportunity to earn a role in Philadelphia. He never quite lived up to his potential in Pittsburgh, and there seem to be some limitations to what he brings to the table. Still, there isn't a whole lot out there to complement Darius Slay in the secondary, so he will have plenty of opportunities to chart a new course with his new team.

For Nelson's sake, let's hope he takes advantage of them.
