Drew Brees Brings Saints Back Against Chargers

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints can never be counted out. Despite being down 20-3 to the Los Angeles Chargers with 4:25 left in the second quarter, the 41-year-old still managed to come out of Week 5 with a 30-27 victory in overtime to push the Saints to 3-2.

Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert was sensational for the Chargers, throwing for 264 yards and four touchdowns in the loss. But in the end, it was Brees who helped his team over the top.

During the first two quarters, typical Twitter talk called Brees washed up following a near pick-six to second-year safety Nasir Adderley. From there, the long-time Saints starter began to look like his old self.

The result? New Orleans outscored Los Angles 27-7 over the course of the two final quarters in regulation and one overtime period. It was the biggest comeback that Drew Brees and the Saints have had in 11 years.

When Brees was asked about the team's second half rally in the postgame interview on ESPN, he said it was all about doing the things that win football games, not lose them.

"Listen, we did not play very well for the first half of this football game," Brees said. "Obviously, we found ourselves in a 20-3 deficit there before the half. We were able to go get some points before half. But really, I think at halftime, we just said that guys need to come out and execute. Do the things that win football games, not the things that get you beat."

It wasn't a division win, but the Saints still sit atop the NFC South with a 3-2 record (1-0 in the NFC South). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers are also both 3-2, but they're also sitting at 1-1 in the division.

For now, Brees and the Saints just want to press forward. The team will work its way through the bye this upcoming week before taking on the Panthers in New Orleans on Oct. 25. It will be a game that welcomes back former backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, as well as former assistant Joe Brady. Brady is now the offensive coordinator in Carolina.
