Did Cowboys Cut Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Make Room for Earl Thomas?

The Dallas Cowboys released Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on Thursday. This was an eyebrow-raising move considering that they'd just signed the former Packers/Bears/Alabama safety in March for a deal worth $4 million with $2.5 million fully guaranteed. The natural speculation about such a decision was whether the Cowboys made this decision to make room for another free agent safety: Earl Thomas.

Thomas was recently released by the Ravens following a tumultuous offseason in which he had a gun pointed at him by his wife after getting caught in infidelity, had a fight with a teammate, and allegedly was late to a meeting because he had to get his car washed.

Nonetheless, Thomas, who turned 31 in May, is still a starting-caliber NFL safety. He started 15 games for the Ravens last season, and the secondary was a major hole for the Cowboys last season. We'll see if this releasing Clinton-Dix was done with this transaction in mind, but it would not be stunning to learn that was the case here.
