Despite Fields’ Success, Bears Seem Poised To Roll With A Healthy Red Rocket
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy did not hesitate to remind everyone that Andy Dalton will be the starter again once he's healthy, even though rookie quarterback Justin Fields put on a solid performance in Sunday's win over the Detroit Lions.
"With Andy, the next two days are going to tell us a lot with where he's at," Nagy said on Monday. "We'll keep an eye on that and update you Wednesday as to his status."
Nagy said the next 24-48 hours will be important to get a good feel for where Dalton is, but he said Dalton's health will determine who starts at quarterback.
"We’ve gotta see where Andy’s at health-wise," he said. "When Andy’s healthy, he’s our starter ...Honestly, the next two days will be revealing to us."
Fields made his second NFL start on Sunday, and he completed 11-of-17 passes for 209 yards with one interception and an 82.7 passer rating. The Bears beat the Lions 24-14. In Fields' first start, the Bears fell to the Browns, but the former Ohio State QB completed only 6-of-20 passes for 68 yards and got X-rays on his throwing hand afterward.
Dalton completed 9-of-11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in less than two quarters against the Bengals before being injured in Week 2. His left knee appeared to buckle, and he immediately pointed to Fields to enter the game and headed to the blue injury tent to be examined. The QB initially appeared to be OK and went back in for a series, but then he went back to the locker room before the half and was later ruled out.
Fields went 6-for-13 for 60 yards with an interception and rushed 10 times for 31 yards against the Bengals in Week 2. He completed the two passes he threw in Week 1 during the loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
