Denver Broncos Will Literally Play a Football Game Without a Quarterback
The Denver Broncos (4-6) have a big problem on their hands. The team will have to play their game against the New Orleans Saints (8-2) on Sunday without a true quarterback.
And no, we are not kidding.
News broke on Saturday that all of the eligible quarterbacks on the roster would miss due to issues with COVID-19. Those three players, which includes Drew Lock, Brett Rypien, and Blake Bortles, were deemed high-risk for close contact.
The player who tested positive is quarterback Jeff Driskel.
There is also a NFL rule that states any player signing with a team must go through a quarantine phase before getting on the field. That means an emergency option cannot be signed at the last second.
Folks, this situation is absolutely bonkers.
There have been two options floated around as "emergency" options. One is backup running back Royce Freeman. The other possibility is practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton, a former quarterback at Wake Forest.
One again, how is this happening? There will be a professional football game on Sunday, and one of the teams participating doesn't have a true quarterback. It has gotten to the point where even Denver's star tight end Noah Fan has voiced his concern via Twitter.
There is no way this can become a trend, right? Well, once a team is allowed to cancel games due to position scarcity, it could open a can of worms that makes finishing the season more difficult. The problem continues to be contact-tracing -- and not COVID-19.
What is the solution? That is tough to say, but something has to be done. This could create safety issue for certain players. Does that seem like a stretch? Well, let's hope a Denver receiver isn't put into a compromised position.
