Davante Adams And Packers Break Off Contract Extension Talks
Trouble stemming from Green Bay's impasse with their franchise quarterback may be trickling down into separate contracts after the Packers announced that they are disengaging from extension talks with lead wideout Davante Adams.
Reported Friday by NFL.com's Nick Shook, the Packers' front office and lead receiver Davante Adams are temporarily ending their talks on a contract extension, a decision that is possibly linked to the unresolved dilemma between the team and reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers.
The 28-year-old Adams does not appear to be content with the current state of the franchise's handling of Rodgers, previously shrugging off comments regarding his whereabouts. Embedding himself as a top name in the conversation surrounding elite wide receivers, Adams may not be keen on going back to Green Bay for the rest of his prime without the presence of a proven quarterback.
Earning the sixth most receiving yards in the league in 2020, while tying for second most receptions with DeAndre Hopkins, Adams' status as an elite receiver has been an unquestioned reality to viewers. While the addition of Aaron Rodgers' MVP campaign contributes to the 1,374 yards from Adams last season, the 18 touchdowns and 115 total receptions posted by the wideout will keep him a top priority on GM Brian Gutekunst's to-do list.
As the organization prepares second-year quarterback Jordan Love to take on the role left by Rodgers — should the reigning MVP choose to leave the team or the league — Adams' waned interest in reaching an extension may prove contrary to the high praises of Love coming out of training camp.
With a future as uncertain as a Hail Mary to Jeff Janis, the Packers must work to track down their star QB and provide a level of certainty for other key players to buy in on before trying to secure long-term deals.
