Daniel Jones Was Clocked At An Incredible Speed During 80-Yard Run
There's a good chance Giants quarterback Daniel Jones didn't expect to wake up this morning with speed bragging rights over Lamar Jackson. It's not like Jones is a turtle. He was clocked at 4.82 in the 40 at the 2019 Combine, but Jackson registered a 4.34 during his Combine 40. But on Thursday night, Jones hit the turbo button on an 80-yard run that ended with him face-first in the Lincoln Financial Field turf.
"Daniel Jones reached 21.23 MPH on his epic, unforgettable 80-yard run vs the #Eagles, the fastest speed reached by any QB as a ball carrier since 2018, per @NextGenStats," Adam Schefter tweeted. "The longest run by a QB who didn’t score on the play since at least 1975."
The fastest speed Lamar Jackson has reached during his career came last week against the Eagles when he was clocked at 21.01 mph while on a 37-yard touchdown run. Lamar defenders will say that he hasn't cut loose on an 80-yard run, so there's no way to of knowing how fast he'd do it. That's true, but Jones is still atop the top speed leaderboard until Lamar breaks one and puts up a faster number. His career-long run from scrimmage was a 50-yard rush in Week 4.
As for the top speed in a game, Raheem Mostert hit 23.09 MPH on an 80-yard rushing touchdown during Week 2. It was the fastest top speed registered by a ball carrier over the last five seasons. With last night's run, Jones has the 15th fastest recorded speed during the 2020 season.
