Colts To Ride Out Wentz Injury

For anyone still thinking the Colts could make another trade for a quarterback, an update from NFL insider Chris Mortensen puts that notion to rest -- at least for right now. Starting quarterback Carson Wentz hasn't been completely ruled out for Week 1, so there's no point in making a move yet.

"The Colts are not trading for Foles, Minshew or Mariota at this time," Mortensen tweeted on Monday evening. "Carson Wentz begins rehabbing his foot after two weeks. He hasn't been ruled out week 1 but it's optimistic. If this relatively safe surgery & rehab gets complicated, then another vet QB will be considered."

As of right now, there are four other quarterbacks listed on the team's roster: Jacob Eason, Brett Hundley, Sam Ehlinger and Jalen Morton. The last two are rookies, while Eason is only a second-year player out of Washington.

Yes, Eason was only a fourth-round pick a year ago, but he's got big-time raw talent, plenty of size (6-foot-6, 231 pounds), some mobility and elite arm strength. There are still issues with footwork, touch, seeing the field and other nuances of playing the position, but Eason at least offers them something to work with.

Let's see how he does in that role.

Eason has got one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, a capable run game with Jonathan Taylor, Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines, enough pass-catchers and a complementary defense. In all honesty, he couldn't ask for a better situation to be in right now.

Hopefully, Wentz can make his way back onto the field sooner rather than later. If not, then another veteran option could be considered down the road. Those options, or at least one of them, will still be there if that time comes.
