Clyde Edwards-Helaire Still Top Rushing Option In Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) made waves this week with the signing of free agent Le'Veon Bell. After being cut by the New York Jets less than two years into his contract, the former second-round pick finds himself in Andy Reid's running back-friendly offense.

The signing gives that Chiefs offense another weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the passing game and in the run game. But let's not forget who will continue to work as the No. 1 running back on the depth chart: first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

The rookie out of LSU took the opportunity on Monday afternoon to remind everyone that was still the main show in town. In a 26-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills, Edwards-Helaire saw a career-high in rushes (26) and rushing yards (161) while also seeing the first 30-touch game of his career.

He also tore off the longest run of his young NFL career with a 31-yard carry in the first quarter.

Edwards-Helaire looks fantastic right now. And there is absolutely no reason to believe that Bell is going to come in and take over the lead role. Even with Bell's history in the league. Even with Edwards-Helaire being a first-year player. It doesn't matter.

Will Bell cut into Edwards-Helaire's workload some? Absolutely, but the former SEC running back will continue to be the top option in Kansas City's run game.

Bell's presence provides another balanced option within the offense. There might be situations where we'll see both players on the field. And there might be situations where Bell lines up as a slot receiver. The creativity from Reid has a chance to be endless.
