Chiefs GM Says He Wants To Keep Honey Badger Locked Up For Years To Come

According to Chiefs GM Brett Veach, Tyrann Mathieu is at the top of his list of priorities. Based on what he said, it sounds like Mathieu will be a Chief for a long time, but is it ever that simple in the NFL?

"We will have some work to do, get with him and his agents. He has proven to be a great leader and player and in the community. We hope to have him with this organization for years to come," Veach said via Skype.

Mathieu signed a three-year, $42 million contract back in 2019 that expires after the 2021 campaign. If Kansas City wants to retain the 30-year-old free safety star, then they'll need find a middle ground on a deal. KC is money-strapped after forking over $500 million and $103 million to defensive star Frank Clark, so they'll need to get creative.

That's not always easy. We witnessed a similar situation fall apart with the Legion of Boom after Russell Wilson threw an interception at the goal line and lost Super Bowl XLIX. Defenders all over the field were expected to take pay cuts to "keep the team together," but then suddenly the blame game of a Super Bowl loss changed the dynamic. Could that happen again here?

We'll have to be patient to see how badly Mathieu wants to stay in Kansas City. And to be fair to him...his play doesn't exactly warrant a pay cut.
