Carson Wentz Needs Foot Surgery, Expected To Miss 5-12 Weeks

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to miss five to 12 weeks of the 2021 season after it was revealed that an old foot injury will require surgery. The injury, which dates back to high school, according to Colts reporter Stephen Holder, is the result of a broken bone that "came loose and caused pain."

The Colts and Wentz decided the best course of action was to have the broken bone removed. " Reich said the decision on surgery was VERY clear cut for their doctors and outside doctors," Holder reported.

The Colts quarterback backup situation currently includes Sam Ehlinger, Jalen Morton and Jacob Eason. It's expected the Colts will have to search for a competent backup to handle the starting job until Wentz can return. The three backups have combined for zero NFL games played.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted Monday that the plan all along had been for Wentz to deal with the injury and rehab. "Surgery is smart," Rapoport tweeted.

As part of the trade from Philly to the Colts, the Eagles agreed to a 2022 conditional second-round pick that would become a first-round pick if Wentz played 75% of the snaps in 2021 or 70 percent if the Colts were to make it to the playoffs this season, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported in February.

With today's news, it appears the Eagles will have to be satisfied with the second-round pick and a third-round pick.
