Cam Newton Re-Signs With Patriots On One-Year Deal
We are getting a sequel to Cam Newton in New England. Despite an up-and-down (mostly down) first season with the Patriots, the former No. 1 overall pick is re-signing with the team on a one-year deal.
The news of Newton's return comes Friday morning from Jim McBride with The Boston Globe.
"BREAKING: The Patriots are re-signing QB Cam Newton to a one-year deal, according to a league source," McBride tweeted.
Update: Adam Schefter with ESPN is reporting that the one-year deal is worth close to $14 million.
After replacing Tom Brady in New England, Newton played in 15 of the team's 16 games. He threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions, which are obviously subpar passing numbers. He also added 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground.
His decline coincided with the franchise's decline. The final regular season record was 7-9 and marked the first time the Patriots have missed the playoffs since 2008.
To be fair, Newton's supporting cast was nothing to write home about, and it's something that Bill Belichick will need to address in Year 2.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach is already doing that, however. He recently made a move to bring back offensive tackle Trent Brown, who should provide an instant upgrade to Newton's protection.
Now, it's a matter of getting Newton more weapons.
