Browns Release Sheldon Richardson After Adding Jadeveon Clowney
After signing defensive tackle Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year, $10 million deal, the Cleveland Browns have just released Sheldon Richardson. Releasing the former first-round pick saves the team $11 million, so there's our reason.
Clowney was officially signed just two days ago. Tough business.
Starting DT Larry Ogunjobi also signed with the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason which makes for two holes to fill. But that's why Clowney was able to command $10 million from Cleveland. It awards the team with a shorter and more flexible contract heading into the 2021 campaign.
Also worth noting: not ideal for Richardson to hit free agency right now as the NFL salary cap dropped after the losses from Covid. Sounds to us like Richardson will be forced to sign with a contender on the low until next year. It gets worse because he's already 30.
Look for contenders to swoop in.
