Brett Favre Wishes The NFL Had 17 Games A Year When He Played
Brett Favre told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he wishes the NFL had added a 17th game back when he played. A football legend that returned to the game after what felt like 15 retirements wanted more games on his plate? No kidding.
"I just wish that it would have happened while I was playing," Favre said. "I would much rather play an extra regular-season game or two or three than preseason. Yeah, you run the risk of injury or the percentages go up -- I don't know how much, but I assume playing one series in a preseason game versus four quarters in a regular-season game the percentages would go up. You know, I've said this my whole career. I'd much rather practice, study, do all the thing you have to do, and at the end of the week, play for real. I think the 17-game schedule is a good thing and I wish it happened while I was playing."
Everything the Packers legend laid out is accurate. He acknowledges the increased risk, although he admits he doesn't know how much, and then he explains why it's more fun. It's got to be more enjoyable for players to ditch pre-season football games. They're scrimmages designed for young players to fly around like spider monkeys for their job, meanwhile veterans walk around the field like Joe Biden, literally just trying not to get hurt.
Veteran players more likely want to spend their time wisely, even if that means more physicality. Sure, it may shorten some careers, but the players know more pay comes with that. Another game has been added to maximize revenue, and the talent -- especially veterans like Brett Favre -- know those in uniform will get a piece of that new pie.
Also, and most importantly, Favre loves football. He spent 20 years slinging risky throws down the field partly because of his abilities, while also enjoying the thrill. Favre always could have tried to slow it all down and play conservatively like a Peyton Manning -- instead he wanted to feel some risk. Didn't always work, but it was exhilarating. Can anyone think of a process less "risky" than pre-season football where you can throw four picks in a half and no one cares? No, no you can't.
You gotta love that Brett Favre loves football and doesn't care about his body. Sometimes we wish he cared more for his own good, though. Brett Favre is the man.
