Black Tuesday In New York: Giants Fire Head Coach Joe Judge
Black Monday has come a day late in New York, as the Giants fired head coach Joe Judge Tuesday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Judge's tenure ends after just two seasons and a 10-23 record.
Judge, 40, appeared to be safe a few weeks ago before a disastrous end to the season. The Giants were outscored 106-26 in losses to the Cowboys, Eagles, Bears and Washington Football Team to finish 4-13.
There was a weird press conference, where Judge gave a passionate rant on the Giants not being a "clown show" organization after the Week 17 loss.
Then there was the quarterback sneak on third and nine from their own four-yard line in Week 18, resembling the "clown show" operation he claimed they were not.
All that was too much to bear for owner John Mara, who made the decision to give Judge third prize after two days of meeting with him.
"Steve (Tisch) and I both believe it is in the best interest of our franchise to move in another direction," Mara said in a statement. "We met with Joe yesterday afternoon to discuss the state of the team. I met again with Joe this afternoon, and it was during that conversation I informed Joe of our decision. We appreciate Joe's efforts on behalf of the organization.
"I said before the season started that I wanted to feel good about the direction we were headed when we played our last game of the season. Unfortunately, I cannot make that statement, which is why we have made this decision. We will hire a general manager and that person will lead the effort to hire a new head coach."
With general manager Dave Gettleman announcing his retirement Monday, the new man in charge will be tasked with hiring the Giants' fourth head coach in the last six years. One can only hope the next one will last longer than two seasons.
