Ben Roethlisberger On Steelers' Playoff Mindset: 'We Probably Aren't Supposed To Be Here'
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is embracing the role of the underdog ahead of Pittsburgh's Sunday matchup against the No. 2 ranked AFC foe, the Kansas City Chiefs.
“We haven’t discussed it, but I think as a group you understand. We probably aren’t supposed to be here. We’re probably not a very good football team,” Roethlisberger sarcastically said. “Of the 14 teams that are in, we’re probably No. 14. We’re a double-digit underdog in the playoffs, so let’s just go play and have fun and see what happens."
“We’re probably 20-point underdogs," he continued. "We’re going to the No. 1 team that has won the AFC the last two years, arguably the best team in football. We don’t have a chance, so let’s just go in and play and have fun.”
Pittsburgh is around a 13-point underdog, and as Larry Brown Sports' Steve DelVecchio reports, while Big Ben may have some jokes, he does believe the Steelers have a chance to win.
DelVecchio writes that Roethlisberger's point is that the team is in the perfect position to embrace the underdog role and not feel any pressure.
"If they’re blown out, Big Ben’s final NFL season will still be considered a success for getting this far," DelVecchio said. "If they find a way to win, the fairytale year continues."
Big Ben did have to pull his sarcasm from somewhere, though. During the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers game on Sunday, many individuals on Twitter were hoping for a tie just to see the Steelers excluded from Super Wild Card Weekend.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin admitted that he "dozed off" toward the end of overtime thriller, which would have eliminated his team from playoff contention.
The two teams previously faced off in Week 16 which resulted in Kansas City beating Pittsburgh 36-10 and securing the AFC West title for the sixth consecutive year.
The Steelers (9-7-1) will travel once again to face the Chiefs (12-5) on Sunday with kickoff set for 8:15 p.m.
