Bears WR Allen Robinson Blames Poor Start On Lack Of Reps With QB Justin Fields
Bears receiver Allen Robinson has always done more with less. Blake Bortles, Mitch Trubisky, Nick Foles, you name 'em, Robinson has found a way to produce.
And when the Bears drafted quarterback Justin Fields with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Robinson was supposed to have his ace. But that connection has not developed, and the 28-year-old is on pace for career lows across the board. Through seven games, Robinson has just 23 catches for 250 yards and a touchdown.
Robinson is frustrated with the lack of production but said on Tuesday that it comes down to not getting enough reps with Fields.
"That's something that we're continuing to build on, continuing to get reps in practice," Robinson said. "There weren't any snaps that we kind of took in training camp. A lot of these things, we're trying to build on."
A lack of reps between the two seems to fall on head coach Matt Nagy's shoulders. Nagy went into the season with veteran Andy Dalton as the starter, but a Week 2 injury meant it was Fields time. Fans were waiting to see him under center, but he hasn't flashed much. With an offensive line that has allowed the most sacks in the NFL, Fields has been under pressure to often to make much headway.
So Fields hasn't had a lot of time to process what's in front of him, which has then led to a decline in Robinson's production. Nagy's stubbornness in not giving Fields any first team reps during the offseason has come back to bite him and has contributed to Chicago ranking dead last in the NFL in total offense.
