Andy Dalton Has Already Been Told He's Starting

Newly signed Bears' quarterback Andy Dalton had his introductory press conference and was asked if he thought he would start. His answer was hilarious, but also showed the Bears' hand a bit.

"They told me I was the starter," Dalton said. "That was one of the reasons I wanted to come here. That's the assurance I got."

So to sum things up: The Chicago Bears just let a 26-year-old Mitchell Trubisky sign a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills getting nothing in return, then they gave Dalton a $10 million deal to be average at best. Sometimes I feel like the Bears will never change.

How can any player be as mediocre as Andy Dalton was during the 2020 campaign and have "assurance" of a starting role? Seems counter-productive to crown average football players as starters six months ahead of the week 1 opener, but what do we know? Apparently the Chicago Bears have this whole thing figured out.

And to be clear, hardly anyone (fans or executives) believed Trubisky was the answer. Perhaps the Bears don't buy into Dalton as a savior either as they only gave him a one-year contract? What's more likely is that head coach Matt Nagy didn't want the distraction of Mitch Trubisky anymore.

Andy Dalton provides a steady and mediocre performance from start to finish that will leave no doubt that the Bears will be bringing in a fresh quarterback in 2021. Either that or they draft a QB this year and understand that Andy Dalton is nothing more than a place-holder.
