What Is Georgia Bulldogs Strongest Position Group?
Georgia is right in the thick of spring practice. With losses on defense and recent injuries to wide receivers, the Bulldogs have plenty to figure out over the next month. However, there are a few position groups that are in pretty good shape.
The guys over at DawgNation recently broke down a few of those position groups in an attempt to identify the strongest. The question that was posed: "What is now the best position group (impact players + depth) on the Georgia football team?"
We then got responses from four members of the DawgNation staff. Here are their determinations:
Yeah, it's pretty clear that it's the defensive line.
The return of mammoth defensive tackle Jordan Davis is huge. At 6-foot-6, 340 pounds, he's a space eater with complementary athleticism. His future in the NFL is bright, but he elected to come back to Athens for one more season, and Georgia fans couldn't be happier about it.
That's where things start, but not where they end. As DawgNation points out, it's a deep unit.
Despite receiving a Senior Bowl invite, Devonte Wyatt unexpectedly returned for another season. Julian Rochester will also be back once again after another injury-riddled season, and he's a valuable piece when healthy.
Plus, former five-star talents Travon Walker and Jalen Carter are set to be solid front-line defenders, whether in a starting or rotational role. Both players saw between 200 and 300 snaps last season.
Now throw in Warren Brinson, who saw 64 snaps as a true freshman in 2020, as depth. Are you now starting to understand the level of depth this unit brings to the table? There will also be the 2021 recruiting class coming in, which includes:
It's not a top-flight group, but it didn't have to be. There is so much talent and depth on the roster already. But this group still has a lot of potential and should add some peace of mind about depth at the very least.
Georgia is loaded at linebacker and running back. Before the injuries to George Pickens and Jermaine Burton, they were also loaded at wide receiver. Honestly, you could probably throw in a few other positions too, but none will rival the Dawgs' defensive front.
