Washington-Cal Canceled Over ONE Asymptomatic Positive COVID Test

The Pac-12 football season is supposed to begin this weekend, but there will be no game for two conference teams.

The game between the University of Washington and California has been canceled because one player tested positive for coronavirus.

One. Single. Asymptomatic. Player.

The related contact tracing left Cal with not enough players to compete.

“It is very disappointing that we will not be opening our 2020 season this Saturday night against Washington,” Cal coach Justin Wilcox told the Associated Press. “My heart goes out first and foremost to all of our players who have been through so much since the pandemic began and worked so hard under difficult circumstances to prepare themselves to play. They have done so well following the protocols that have been put in place, but as we are finding out first-hand, playing football during 2020 is a fragile situation.”

Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton expressed similar concerns.

“The health and well-being of our student-athletes is always at the forefront of our decision-making,” Knowlton told the AP. “We have been diligent in the development and execution of our return-to-play plan, and our goal all along has been to provide a safe environment and to mitigate risk as much as possible."

One. Single. Player.

Saturday's game between Air Force and Army was postponed Thursday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases. The schools are trying to reschedule.

“We are disappointed to postpone this game, but the health and safety of our cadets, staff and the community continues to be our No. 1 priority at the academy,” Air Force director of athletics Nathan Pine told the AP.
