Vols Assistant Coach Is Building Up Jimmy Calloway

Over the years, the Tennessee Volunteers have had their fair share of electric receivers dart through Nashville. Names like Peerless Price, Robert Meachem and Joey Kent come to mind. Jimmy Calloway seems poised to join them. After making his season debut last weekend, the sophomore pass catcher has assistant coach Kodi Burns seeing star potential.

“The sky’s the limit for Jimmy," said Burns.

After sitting out Tennessee's opener because of an injury, Calloway burst onto the scene in a big way in Saturday's loss to Pitt. Calloway hauled in three catches for 59 yards, including an electrifying 44-yard touchdown just before halftime. The 44-yard catch and run provided a glimpse of the star potential the former high school quarterback possesses.

“That was just a glimpse of what he can become. Just got to continue to grow and develop,” Burns commented after practice.

“Like I said before, Jimmy Calloway is gonna be a special player when it’s all said and done. I think it was evident out there on the field this past week that once he gets the ball in his hands, he’s a difference-maker. We knew that when he was a quarterback in high school and slowly starting to develop into a wideout, so really excited about the future with Jimmy."

Calloway's development was evident to coaches throughout the offseason and made a favorable impression on his position coach, Burns: "I told him the other day, just watching his growth and development through the spring, the summer and now starting to make some plays in an actual football game against a pretty good ACC team, I was really impressed with him."

There's no ceiling on Calloway's explosive potential. “The sky’s the limit for Jimmy if he continues to grow, listen to coaching- which he does, he does a phenomenal job of," added Burns. "He’s just a great person, a good kid, and he’s truly a good football player as well.”

Next up for Calloway and the Volunteers: a home date with Tennessee Tech on Saturday afternoon.
