UCLA's Last-Minute Cancellation Nets NC State Coach $150K Bonus
North Carolina State head coach Dave Doeren's west coast trip didn't go as planned, but at least he'll head back east $150,000 richer -- thanks to a poorly-timed decision by would-be opponent UCLA.
As OutKick reported earlier this morning, the Bruins pulled out of their Holiday Bowl matchup with NC State just five hours prior to Tuesday night's kickoff, leaving Doeren and the Wolfpack program irritated and feeling "lied to" after making the cross-country trip to San Diego.
Bowl organizers attempted to find a replacement opponent to fill in for the Bruins but had no luck. Because of that, Holiday Bowl officials declared the Wolfpack as winners, and presented Doeren with a trophy and, indirectly, an extra $150,000.
Doeren's contract has a clause that states he would receive a $150,000 bonus if NC State reached 10 wins. Additionally, his assistant coaches receive a combined $100,000 as part of the 10-win bonus within the contract.
Per a tweet from ESPN's Andrea Adelson, "NC State will count this as a 10th win in their record books."
After accepting the Holiday Bowl trophy, Wolfpack athletic director Boo Corrigan released the following statement: "I commend coach Doeren, his staff and especially our players for making great decisions and doing the right things to ensure that they were ready to play every week and all the way until yesterday. I can't wait to watch them run it back in 2022."
Next fall will be Doeren's 10th season as head coach of the Wolfpack. Including the Holiday Bowl win, his career record at NC State now stands at 65-49.
