Sun Bowl Canceled, Snapping 86-Year Run
After a surge of COVID numbers in El Paso, Texas this November, the Sun Bowl has been canceled. This will be the first time since 1934 that they won't host the game. According to Sun Bowl Football Committee Chairmen John Folmer, there was too much at stake to play.
"It's sad, and there is a lot of hurt in the Sun Bowl family, but canceling the game is better than the hurt COVID would cause," Folmer said.
What's most interesting here is that moving the game wasn't on the table. What's the harm in moving the Sun Bowl to a site with less COVID risk? It just doesn't make sense.
For those keeping track, that's now four of the 12 Pac-12 bowl games canceled already. COVID truthers are likely celebrating this announcement masked up on their couches, but the rest of us who love sports are not happy.
The Sun Bowl is like the Super Bowl in El Paso, and canceling this event will be financially devastating to the local community. As the second-oldest bowl game behind only the Rose Bowl, skipping out on this proud New Year's Eve tradition just doesn't feel right.
We hope there will be further comment about the future of the Sun Bowl soon, so we'll keep our eyes peeled.
