Scott Frost To Return As Nebraska Head Coach, Has 'Clear Plan And Vision For The Future'

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost will return as the Cornhuskers' coach in 2022 with a restructured contract, athletic director Trev Alberts announced Monday.

For the fourth consecutive season, the Cornhuskers will miss a bowl game as the team dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play following Saturday's 26-17 loss to No. 6 Ohio State.

Nebraska's new athletic director — who was hired in July — says despite the uninspiring record, he's seen the progress he has expected to see and that it reflects strong leadership.

"In my four months at Nebraska, I have closely observed our football team, and had several productive discussions with Coach Frost. Scott has laid out a clear plan and vision for the future of Nebraska Football and has agreed to a restructured contract," Alberts said in a statement. "I am excited to continue to work together with Scott. We share a love of Nebraska and this football program and want nothing more than Nebraska Football to again compete for championships."

Frost, who was hired ahead of the 2018 season, is 15-27 at Nebraska. This season, all seven of Nebraska's losses have come by nine points or fewer.

"We all recognize our record has not been what anyone wants it to be," Alberts continued. "I have been clear that I am looking for incremental progress, and I have seen that in several key areas this season. Our team has continued to compete at a high level, and the young men in our program have remained unified and shown great resiliency, which is an important reflection of the leadership of Coach Frost and his staff."

The 46-year-old head coach has not won more than five games in a season at Nebraska and is responsible for a 10-23 conference record in his time with the program.

Frost acknowledged the team hasn't won at a high-enough level but thanked Alberts for his confidence in him to continue to lead the program.

"I appreciate the confidence Trev Alberts has shown in me to continue to lead this program," Frost said in a statement. "I love this state, this football program, and am honored and humbled for the opportunity to serve as the head coach at my alma mater. Our immediate focus is on the two games ahead against Wisconsin and Iowa, and the opportunity in front of us to build momentum heading into the offseason and 2022. I understand we have not won at a high-enough level, but I am confident our football program will continue to take steps forward."

In November 2019, Frost received a contract extension through the 2026 season and would have been owed $20 million if fired before Jan. 1, 2022, ESPN reports. Nebraska did not immediately announce the terms of Frost's restructured contract.

ESPN reports that while Frost will return in 2022, several changes are expected to his staff, most likely on offense.

The Cornhuskers have a bye week before traveling to face conference foe No. 20 Wisconsin on Nov. 20, and ending the season at home against Big Ten opponent No. 19 Iowa on Nov. 26.
