Report: LSU Pushing For Notre Dame's Brian Kelly To Fill Opening

LSU is reported to be making an "aggressive push" to hire Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly as its next head coach, The Athletic reports.

The program is expecting to hire Kelly and an announcement could come as early as Tuesday, Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel reports.

Kelly is in his 12th year at Notre Dame and in his 31st season of coaching after taking over South Bend in 2010.

He is the winningest coach in Fighting Irish history, has made a pair of College Football Playoff appearances, and has kept the No. 6 Fighting Irish in the AP Top 25 mix and CFP talks again this season.

The Athletic reports the Tigers were rumored to be in play for several coaches who inked elsewhere, including now-USC head coach Lincoln Riley, who vehemently denied LSU's open position and within a day took the USC job.

Kelly's 263 career wins — the third-most among active FBS head coaches, behind only Alabama’s Nick Saban and North Carolina’s Mack Brown — would be a big hire for LSU, The Athletic reports.

Looking back at LSU's coaching history though, things seem a little familiar.

Former LSU football coach Les Miles was fired four games into the 2016 season at 2-2 after nearly getting dismissed the previous year and then-defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron replaced him as interim coach. He went 5-2 and was retained as head coach.

Orgeron and the program reached an agreement in mid-October to depart after this season, with LSU AD Scott Woodward citing "wins and losses on the field" and "where this program was going."

Woodward cited a need for a new direction to achieve success and said "the search for LSU football’s next championship coach begins now.”

It makes sense that Woodward's expectations are high, though. The program's previous three head coaches have each won a national title: Saban in 2003, Miles in 2007 and Orgeron in 2019.
