Report: Ed Orgeron Won't Return to LSU in 2022, Expected To Complete Season

Despite a record-setting performance and upset of No. 20 Florida on Saturday, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron and the program have reached an agreement for Orgeron not to return next season.

Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger reports LSU and Orgeron's separation agreement is expected to allow him to complete this season, and the discussions began the Tigers beat the No. 20 Gators.

Orgeron is 49-17 at LSU but is 9-8 since the 2019 National Championship. Dellenger reports the separation goes beyond on-field results, though.

"A strained relationship between coach & administration - rooted in team management & public/private behavior - has warped into an untenable situation, distrust & outbursts," Dellenger tweeted.

In January 2020, Orgeron and LSU agreed to a six-year contract extension with a base annual salary of $6 million. This came just after the Tigers won the 2019 national championship, The Advocate reports.

Orgeron is the second highest-paid coach behind Nick Saban, his total pay adding up to more than $9.01 million, according to USA Today.

USA Today estimates the buyout for Orgeron at $17,150,000 as of Dec. 1, 2021, assuming he is fired on that day without cause. His actual school pay is listed as $8,387,500.
