Ohio State's Turning To Their Backup Quarterback(s) Versus Akron
Ohio State's up and down offense will have a new look Saturday. With inconsistent starter C.J. Stroud nursing a bum shoulder, the Buckeyes are turning to not just one, but two backup signal callers to try and spark the offense. Kyle McCord and Jack Miller will take snaps against an Akron team that presents about as much danger as a light breeze.
Neither McCord nor Miller have attempted a pass at the collegiate level.
It's not clear when Stroud was injured, though he was seen stretching and tending to his shoulder while on the sidelines of last week's win over Tulsa. The injury is not believed to be overly serious.
Stroud's bad wing paves the way for true freshman Kyle McCord and redshirt frosh Jack Miller III to play their first meaningful snaps. “Kyle and Jack have done a good job, so the plan right now is to — we’ll see how today goes — but probably use C.J. in somewhat of an emergency capacity on Saturday and play some of those other guys,” head coach Ryan Day said.
Though he's yet to name a starter, Day confirmed that both McCord and Miller will see the field, giving Ohio State a pair of gunslingers as green as their field turf. Neither player has attempted a pass and McCord is yet to take an in-game snap. Miller saw action in three games last year, but didn't put the ball in the air.
“We have young quarterbacks, and that’s going to be how it works. At some point, you let them play and learn from their mistakes," said Day.
