Ohio State QB Quinn Ewers Takes First Snaps Against Michigan State

In the final moments of Ohio State's 56-7 win over Michigan State on Saturday, the crowd went wild as Quinn Ewers entered the game for the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State freshman quarterback played the first snaps of his collegiate career in the final moments of the game. He came in as relief to QB2 Kyle McCord, who took over for Heisman Trophy candidate C.J. Stroud after he tossed six touchdown passes over three-quarters of action.

247Sports reports that Ewers, the No. 1 overall player in the 2021 class per the 247Sports Composite, could be an NCAA transfer portal casualty for Ohio State in the offseason "unless he's willing to compete in a talent-rich quarterback room for the Buckeyes with Stroud returning, among others."

“That was the first snap of his career, he would be a senior in high school this year, but with name, image, and licensing issues in the state of Texas for football players, they wouldn’t allow him to do it so he high school football, graduated and enrolled early,” Kirk Herbstreit said during the game broadcast. “The guy. The recruit, No. 1 prospect in the country, which makes for a very interesting 2022 because C.J. Stroud is not going anywhere. Is Ewers going to be patient behind C.J. Stroud?”

Ewers signed a $1.4 million, three-year deal before the season opener with GT Sports Marketing allowing the business to own the rights to sell Ewers' autograph, 247Sports reports.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day seems to have confidence in the young QB not only in his skill set but also in his commitment to the program. Ewers initially committed to Texas in August 2020 before decommitting and pledging to Day and the Buckeyes in November 2020.

"... he’s certainly drinking through a firehose, and I think the guys on the team appreciate that. He doesn’t have the recruits that, you know, was in his class," Day said in an interview with Big Ten Network. "He kind of jumped ahead so. But he’s a resilient young man.”
