Northwestern Embraces Its Disrespect With End Zone Paint Job

Northwestern is set to take on Auburn in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl on Saturday, but now things have gone to a new level. On Thursday morning, the official Twitter account for the Citrus Bowl posted a photo seeking the Wildcats' approval.

What was it a photo of? A potential concept for the end zone art, and it was epic. For Auburn, it was the standard name. But instead of "Northwestern" in the other end zone, the Citrus Bowl got creative and went with the "Fightin' Rece Davises."

For anyone unfamiliar with the story, ESPN analyst Joey Galloway took a jab at Northwestern back in November by calling them "a bunch of Rece Davises running around out there." The Wildcats embraced the disrespectful moniker and ran with it.

That might be why the Twitter account for Northwestern dared the Citrus Bowl to follow through. They quote tweeted the end zone concept with a simple "do it. you won't." Well, the Citrus Bowl was ready to back it up.

If this is real (please be real), then 2021 is off to a heck of a start. No offense to Auburn, but I would probably be worried. The game is set to kickoff today at 1 p.m. ET (noon CT) on ABC.

Update: In a crushing development, it was discovered that the end zone art was, in fact, fake. Still an incredible back-and-forth exchange, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't at least a little disappointed.
