No. 23 BYU Silences Critics In Win Over No. 19 Arizona State

BYU earned its third straight victory over a Pac-12 opponent as the No. 23 Cougars beat No. 19 Arizona State 27-17 on Saturday night in Provo.

BYU quarterback Jaren Hall completed 15-of-27 passes for 214 yards, scoring two touchdowns and throwing two interceptions. The sophomore also rushed seven times for 38 yards but left with an injury late in the fourth quarter. 

Both teams scored in the first quarter but the Cougars' defense was able to hold the Sun Devils offense to no points in the second quarter — Arizona State, on the other hand, wasn't able to contain the BYU offense and allowed two scores.

After the half, BYU led 21-7 but the Cougars offense didn't keep its momentum and mistake-plagued drives allowed the ASU offense to take control and score 10 points in the third quarter.

It didn't make for a dull game, though. Just at the end of the third quarter, BYU converted on third-down with a 17-yard strike to junior wide receiver Gunner Romney.

A 28-yard scamper by BYU quarterback Jaren Hall had the Cougars set up at the Sun Devil 26 before Arizona State intercepted Hall’s throw as he was being sacked. The Sun Devils returned the pick 60 yards before sophomore runningback Tyler Allgeier chased the defender down, punched the ball out and the sophomore quarterback recovered it for BYU at the team's 15-yard line.

The Sun Devils wouldn't add any points on the board in the fourth, while the Cougars added six, leading to the 27-17 victory.

The Cougars also improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory and marked consecutive wins over ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks during the regular season for the first time in school history.

The Cougars will host South Florida in a third-straight home game on Sept. 25. The Sun Devils fall to 2-1 overall with the loss and will next face Colorado at home on Sept. 25.
