Miami, Ex-Panthers OC Joe Brady Reportedly Have Mutual Interest

Miami has its guy, head coach Mario Cristobal, so now it's time to fill out a staff.

The first big hire could be on the way in the form of recently fired Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Brady and Miami have mutual interest, and ongoing conversations indicate Brady will soon be Miami's offensive coordinator, per The Dan Le Batard Show's Mike Ryan Ruiz.

"Can confirm real mutual interest as @ByTimReynolds reported earlier. I know conversations have already been had & comms are open," Ruiz said on Twitter. "I don’t know where it stands at this very moment. But there is certainly something to it. It would be a tremendous hire, IMO."

Brady, 32, became a hot name in the coaching ranks after he served as the passing game coordinator for LSU's undefeated 2019 National Championship team. He was seen as a key component to the success of now Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who had a Heisman Trophy winning season in 2019. That year, Burrow completed 76.3 of his passes with 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 202.0 passer rating.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule hired him in 2020, but then fired him this past Sunday.

Brady is notably a Miami Lakes, Florida native and attended Everglades High School, just 25 miles northwest of Miami's campus in Coral Gables. Brady would be coaching a quarterback room spearheaded by talented freshman quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke completed 62.3% of his passes with 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 160.1 passer rating in 2021.

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Cristobal was very complimentary of Van Dyke, according to the Miami Herald's David Wilson.

"It's obvious watching from afar there's not a better quarterback in the country," Cristobal said.
