Joe Brady Did Not Go To Senior Bowl With Carolina Coaching Staff
The Carolina Panthers are back coaching the Senior Bowl for the second consecutive season. This time, they will be without offensive coordinator Joe Brady and a couple of other coaches. The reason is reportedly related to COVID-19, but those temporary losses have created an interesting element.
Brady has been getting a lot of run as a potential head coaching option for various openings. At this point, it's not a matter of if Brady moves on from Carolina, it's when. In other words, head coach Matt Rhule needs to plan for life after Brady.
The second-year NFL coach is handling the situation in his own way. Instead of calling plays himself, he's giving the following assistant coaches an opportunity to call a quarter of Saturday's action in Mobile:
Will this be a trial run for Brady's replacement? It should be.
And think about how much fun that will make Saturday. Players will have to rotate and prove themselves for better draft positioning, and some coaches will have the chance to earn a promotion down the line. The aggressive play-calling that this scenario encourages could be must-watch TV.
Or ... I'm completely wrong, and it ends terribly with no opportunity to build momentum. Either way, I guess.
