Georgia QB Stetson Bennett Struggles, Gets Benched
Stetson Bennett is a true underdog story. After leaving Georgia in 2018, the former walk-on eventually returned to Athens and surprisingly won the starting job this season. It was a "feel-good" situation, but the honeymoon phase is over.
On Saturday, Bennett was benched in favor of backup D'Wan Mathis due to struggles against Florida. The Bulldogs are down 41-21 in the third quarter, and Bennett has not been effective. It was a move many expected after his slow start against the Gators.
It has been a brutal reaction from social media, but anyone who has watched the game understands that the struggles are real. Granted, Bennett is not responsible for everything that is going wrong with the Georgia offense. But he is responsible for enough of it.
On the night, Bennett is 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) for 78 yards, one touchdown and one interception. That touchdown came on a 32-yard pass to freshman receiver Marcus Rosmey-Jacksaint. Since then, the junior quarterback has been awful.
Mathis was the one to come into the game for the Bulldogs, but many fans are left wondering what the status of USC transfer J.T. Daniels. He has been recovering from a knee-injury suffered in 2019, and apparently he hasn't done enough -- either from a health standpoint or with his play -- to earn a chance in the game.
Georgia needs some sort of spark. They've recruited way too well on the offensive side of the football to struggle this way.
