CFP Committee Meeting Ends Without An Agreement On Expansion
The College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting has ended without a resolution on expansion.
Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff, released a statement to the media present at the meeting.
"We continue to make progress, but a variety of issues remain. The commissioners will meet again to see if the remaining items can be settled," Hancock said. "The possibility of expansion is complicated and has multiple issues associated with it.
"Given the importance of the matter and our desire to achieve as much consensus as possible, we will continue our meetings to see if the differences that exist can be narrowed."
While the committee would like to come to a consensus soon, Hancock said it's possible for expansion not to take place until the 2025-26 season is over. The committee has been negotiating for five months, leading to frustration among conference commissioners.
"I wish we were finished in September but didn't work out that way," Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.
Bowlsby is in a favor of a 12-team playoff, which is the likely method if the playoff is expanded. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, meanwhile, is on board with 12 teams, but not eight. He, like Bowlsby, expected a deal to be done by now.
"I came here ready to make a decision but I understand more work is needed," Sankey said.
Per Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger, there is no followup meeting scheduled, but Hancock said the next will likely come in early January.
