Shaka Smart Leaving Texas For Marquette
After failing to win a single NCAA Tournament game in six seasons at Texas, Shaka Smart is leaving to take the head coaching job at Marquette, per Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today.
Smart went from creating the "havoc" full-court press while at VCU, to using a slower-paced, methodical approach while at Texas. He compiled a 109-86 record with the Longhorns, but went just 52-56 in the Big 12. And no, they never won a game in the Big Dance.
This year, Smart and Texas were eliminated in the first round by Abilene Christian, an in-state mid-major program that has been been a member of Division I for less than a decade.
At Marquette, Smart will replace Steve Wojciechowski, who was fired at the end of the season. Smart had two years left on his contract with Texas, but the buyout option was said to be fairly manageable.
An official announcement on Smart's move to Marquette is expected soon.
