Michigan State Will Just Be Called 'Spartans' After All

Michigan State basketball will still go by the Spartans nickname, but it needed to send out a press release to explain that fact.

All the fuss started when the school announced a massive new endorsement deal with Rocket Mortgage, founded by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who also just happens to be a Michigan State grad. Gilbert is also close with Spartans coach Tom Izzo -- and even once tried to recruit Izzo to coach the Cavs.

Anyway, upon announcing the deal with Rocket Mortgage, it sounded as if Michigan State would now be called the "MSU Spartans presented by Rocket Mortgage." It sounded that way because that's precisely how Michigan State announced it.

"Under the new five-year deal, Detroit-based Rocket Mortgage will be the presenting sponsor of the famed men's basketball team which will now be known throughout the Breslin Center as, 'MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage,'" the release read.

But you can relax, MSU fans. The school sent out another statement Friday to clarify matters.

In other words, "MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage" is just a suffix that will be attached to the program.

So it was just all a mix-up. The real bottom line here is the school has found yet another way to rake in even more cash via athletics. And all Michigan State fans care about is that their team wins. Call them whatever you wish, as long as you don't call them Wolverines.
